Detroit Free Press: Washington-based auto writer
The Detroit Free Press is seeking an auto writer who will be based in the newspaper’s Washington bureau.
The reporter will cover regulatory and congressional issues related to the auto industry, including recall and safety matters, fuel economy debates, lobbying, and trade and labor policy developments.
The writer also will work closely with the paper’s Detroit-based autos team, helping to cover major news developments in the domestic and global auto industry. The writer also would occasionally collaborate on watchdog projects and breaking news with a political reporter based in Washington. We need an enterprising reporter who produces stories that range from watchdog to explanatory to analytical. Candidates must have clips showing experience with digging into public records and a track record for developing deep sourcing in the industry, agencies and congressional offices.
The Free Press is the nation’s ninth-largest Sunday newspaper. Its award-winning autos and business staff has been recognized by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers as producing one of the top business reports in the country.

Automotive Ad Sales Representative
RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for increasing share of market in the automotive advertising segment by successfully selling advertising to new and existing accounts and Cars.com advertising to independent dealers. Develop ongoing relationships with clients, identifying needs and opportunities in order to provide sales solutions for customers while at the same time meeting and/or exceeding revenue and strategic product goals. Responsibilities also include taking digital photographs and service existing customers as they are related to the used auto book publication and other automotive products. This position involves developing strong professional relationships with accounts and being aware of their spending plans with DMP and competitive media, creating and delivering sales presentations for existing and new accounts, as well as the development of timely solutions to advertiser problems/issues to ensure effective customer relationships and retention of accounts. Also responsible for completing advertiser requests such as billing requests, adjustments, kill/corrections/changes, etc. within the proper deadlines and procedures.
REQUIREMENTS: Degree and two years of related sales experience. Specific industry knowledge of competitive media / automotive trends desired. Professional interpersonal and presentation skills are needed. Excellent customer service orientation and organizational skills are required. Must be highly motivated and goal oriented. Proficiency using personal computer/laptop, with specific knowledge of Microsoft Office programs. Ability to utilize current technology to effectively manage duties, gather data, complete assignments/reports, etc. Use of a personal vehicle, a valid driver’s license and good driving record are required.

Digital Design Team Supervisor
Digital Design Team Supervisor will oversee the Client Solutions Creative digital design presentation team and design Flash banner ads, Point Roll designs and various forms of digital sales collateral to support client-specific needs and/or specific client solution initiatives.
The DDTS supervises the digital presentation staff with regard to coaching, development, scheduling and training as well as develops creative ideas and concepts based on the project request form and provided copy while adhering to project deadlines.
Projects may encompass the following: Flash banner ad design for spec and live ads, Point Roll technology, splash pages, logo buttons, e-cards, e-mail blasts, web site mock ups, promo banners, custom graphics and illustrations.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in graphic design or fine arts and two years experience in digital media design or equivalent experience are required.
- Supervisory experiences and an extensive knowledge of HTML, Dreamweaver, CSS, Flash, Adobe PhotoShop, web graphics and web graphics optimization techniques required.
- PHP and JAVAScript is a plus, along with both Mac and Windows skills.
- Will utilize Macintosh computers and software packages and must have a working knowledge of scripting and web site design.
- Excellent leadership, project management, presentation, customer service and communication skills are needed.
- Must be highly motivated, organized and have the ability to react productively to change.
- Must be able to work in a fast paced environment, coordinate several tasks simultaneously and work well with other departments to achieve overall goals.
- Use of personal vehicle, valid driver’s license, state mandated auto insurance and good driving record are required.

Media Reseach Analyst
The Media Reseach Analyst will work with the Research team to support the development of cross-platform packages by providing market research and intelligence that supports sales propositions, proposals and presentations. Will serve all sales channels, including print, digital, custom and targeted products. Responsible for:
- overall data interpretation and the preparation of marketing sales presentations and related pieces.
- analyzing and reporting of local competitive media advertising.
- development and coordination of sales packaging and sales collateral, focusing on innovative, creative ideas that leverage products, platforms, services and capabilities.
- analyze proposed multimedia buys and recommend best product mix to yield greater result.
Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree in Advertising/Marketing and two years of related experience in broadcast media planning, media-based agency, and/or digital advertising background is required, preferably with experience in marketing, research, data analysis, and client solutions.
Proficiency and experience utilizing and accessing Scarborough, Claritas, Nielsen Media Intelligence and Arbitron are required.

Public Relations/ Marketing Intern
This is an unpaid internship for students currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program.
The PR/Marketing Intern will shadow and receive firsthand knowledge of how Marketing department staff promotes goodwill in the community and capitalizes on marketing opportunities for the Detroit Media Partnership, The Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, and Signature Media through events, sponsorships, and other projects.
Will receive mentoring from the Brand Manager as past programs and new opportunities are evaluated and decisions are made as to which ones are most beneficial to pursue. This may include the completion of an analysis of each project that includes revenue, expenses and benefits. Will receive instruction on and participate in details pertaining to an event/project (from concept to execution): Food, facility, decorations, databases, speakers, prizes, awards, volunteers, mailings, collateral materials, promotions ads, registrations, etc. All aspects of sponsorship programs including in-paper promotion, on-site coordination, third party involvement, DMP exposure elements, newsroom possibilities and outside promotion will be explored. This will include learning about and assisting with planning, organizing and coordinating programs and events with community groups and non-profit organizations. Opportunities may exist to coordinate portions of existing marketing projects such as DFP Marathon, Money 101, Spelling Bee, Partnership for Humanity, consumer shows, travel shows, etc., as well as, exhibits at various trade show and community events -- may include displaying product, merchandise giveaways, selling subscriptions, etc. Will learn how the integrity of all brands is maintained.
REQUIREMENTS: Pursuing a Bachelor degree in Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing or Communications. Experience with events, sponsorships, marketing partnerships and/or promotional program is highly preferred. Must possess excellent communication and presentation skills including the ability to interact with all levels of staff and management. Must be highly motivated, organized and able to coordinate multiple tasks within a fast-paced environment.

Multimedia Designer Intern
This is an unpaid internship for students currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program.
The Multimedia Designer Intern will learn about and assist with a variety of special projects involving print and web design, multimedia presentations, digital illustration, still and video photography and new technology research. Will shadow and be instructed by staff as they create / maintain multimedia files, assist with the development of advertising collateral/concept treatments for advertising and investigate new concepts as they pertain to presentations and leave-behind materials. Opportunities will exist to follow some projects from concept to completion, thus adding to intern’s personal portfolio. Specific industry software and guidelines will be explored as intern assists and sometimes leads in the designing of collateral, advertisements, digital illustrations and video, logos and animations/motion graphics for interactive presentations and print/electronic media communications. Digital photography projects may also be touched upon on an as-available basis.
REQUIREMENTS: Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or fine arts and Junior/Senior status. Must have knowledge of PowerPoint, Quark, Illustrator, Flash, Final Cut and Photo Shop (or similar graphics programs). Working knowledge of Dreamweaver, After Effects, Multi-Ad Creator and Acrobat Distiller is a plus. Mac experience is required. Must have the ability to produce print and web graphics and have a good understanding of basic photography, web and print design process. A strong sense of design, particularly as it relates to layout, composition and color theory. Excellent organization, recordkeeping and communication skills required along with a strong customer service orientation. Online portfolio is required.

Email Marketing Intern
This is an unpaid internship for students currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program.
Under supervision of Audience Development staff, the Email Marketing Intern will assist in the completion of special projects including web/email design, email tracking, A/B Split testing and email research.
Will shadow and be guided by staff on creative responsibilities, which may include assisting and sometimes leading in the design of HTML templates, graphics for emails, banner advertisements and landing pages.
Will receive direction and learn about email tracking. Will assist with reporting functions, including open, click rates, spam complaints, etc. and will use this information to analyze the data to maximize the success of current and future email campaigns, as well as making recommendations. Opportunity and support will exist for intern to research other mediums and publications to find new and creative ways to utilize email marketing to subscribers.
REQUIREMENTS: Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Design (Graphic / Multimedia / Web) or Marketing. Must have knowledge of Photoshop and HTML. Online portfolio is preferred.
