The Detroit News

Award winning, community
minded

From its earliest days, The Detroit News has been far more than a passive reporter of the news; the newspaper has been involved in bettering the lives of its readers. That passion has resulted in three prestigious Pulitzer Prizes and numerous awards for its staff in national, regional and local competitions.

Our business reporting team took top honors in the past year in the prestigious Gerald Loeb business journalism awards and the National Headliner Awards competitions.

The newspaper's Web site, www.detnews.com, won an EPpy Award in 2008 for best overall design of a Web site, and was named a finalist in the best sports Web site category.

And our sports coverage was again cited as among the Top 10 in the nation by the Associated Press Sports Writers group.

The newspaper won Pulitzer Prizes in 1942 (photography), 1982 (meritorious public service) and 1994 (beat reporting). The News also was named a finalist in the 1991 and 2003 competitions.

Most recently, The News and its staff were cited as winners in the following contests:

  • American Society of Newspaper Editors

  • Education Writers Association's National Awards for Education Reporting

  • International Wheel Awards competition

  • Michigan Excellence in Journalism competition

  • Michigan AP Editorial Association

  • The Michigan Press Association

  • Michigan Press Photographer's Association

  • Midwest Travel Writers Association

  • National Association of Black Journalists

  • National Society of Newspaper Columnists

  • Professional Hockey Writers Association

  • Society of American Business Editors and Writers

  • Society of American Travel Writers

  • Society of Professional Journalists - Detroit

The News is an active supporter of community affairs and activities, which include the annual Helping Hands funds, the Old Newsboy's Goodfellows Campaign, the Rosa Parks scholarship fund and our annual selection of the Michiganians of the Year. This year, the paper joined with Detroit Renaissance, a group of Metro Detroit business executives, and launched the inaugural Renaissance Awards program. The award will recognize an individual or organization that has shown outstanding leadership in reinventing the region's economy.
