SHERIDAN RICHARD G. (SZCZOTKA) Age 71, of Lakewood, Ohio, passed away on December 26, 2009. He was born January 1, 1938 in Hamtramck, Michigan, son of Rudolph Szczotka (decd) and Lottie (Lewek) Szczotka Siek. Dick was a 1955 graduate of Hamtramck High School, and a 1959 graduate of the University of Michigan. He was the founding director of the Ohio Legislative Budget Office and an employee with Cleveland's Community Solutions' Public Policy and Advocacy Team. He is survived by his mother. Arrangements were handled by Fortuna Funeral Home in Cleveland. A celebration of Dick's life and work will be held on Sunday, March 21, at 3 p.m. at the Lakewood Park Women's Pavilion, 14532 Lake Avenue, Lakewood. McKEOWN WALTER J. Age 94, March 3, 2010 of Northville. Retired Administrative Director of the City of Detroit Lighting Department and long time Officer and Director of the Detroit Retired City Employees Association. Preceded in death by his wife, Elvira on July 7, 2001. Mr. McKeown was descended from a family that migrated from upper New York State in 1834 and settled near Carleton, Michigan. Walter was born in Detroit and educated at the Holy Redeemer Schools. As a youth, he was active in the boy scouts and became the first Eagle Scout of Troop 226 in June, 1930. He graduated from high school in 1933 and entered Wayne University that September. He worked his way through college employed as a Bookbinder. After graduating in 1938 with a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration, he was hired as an accountant by Standard Oil. He left that company to accept a Civil Service position as a Realty Appraiser in the City of Detroit Assessor's office. He was in the Army from April, 1941 to November 1945 serving with the 32nd Infantry Division and the Air Force Training Command. After World War II, he returned to work at the city as an accountant in the Controller's office and later as Administrative Director of the Lighting Department and retired with more than 30 years of service. Walter earned an MBA at the University of Detroit in 1954 and was a director of the MBA Alumni Association for several years. He was a Past President of the City of Detroit Accountants Association and life member of Monaghan Council, K of C. He participated in many sports. Golf was his favorite game. He was an active player for sixty years. His estate will be shared by various charitable, educational and environmental organizations. JONES JAMES T. James served the Wayne County Sheriff's Dept. for 29 years before retiring in 1996. He also served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1952 to 1953. James was the father of the late Detroit News and USA Today writer, James T. Jones IV. He was brother of jazz singer, Betty Carter. James should have been a singer himself, says wife Vanessa. His body was cremated. No services are planned. He is also survived by daughter, Erika, and stepdaughter, Qiana.

JOHNSTON KENARD ARTHUR 90, of Evergreen, CO passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2010. Born and raised in the Detroit area, he also lived in Grosse Pointe Park and Harper Woods. Ken and his wife Mary moved to the Evergreen area in the early 1980's. He served in the Army Aircorps as a Master Sergeant at Wilmington Field, DE, during WWII, inspecting repaired plans, though he was unable to go overseas due to polio. Ken was very active at Church of the Hills, Evergreen Music Festival and the American Orchid Society. He loved caring for his numerous variation of orchids. He continued his education at Wayne State University earning a Masters of Public Administration. Bob worked for 43 years at the Citizens Research Council of Michigan. He was the Executive Director for 15 years and retired in 1994. Throughout his career, Bob was a champion for better local and state government and passionate about serving the people of Detroit and Michigan. Over the years and into retirement, Bob served on numerous community and foundation boards. Those organizations include; Adult Well-Being Services of Detroit, Detroit Area Agency on Aging, and the Earhart Foundation.
