2009-11-20 MIKINA, JOHN A.
MIKINA JOHN A. 94, of Hendersonville, passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, at his home after a short illness. A native of Detroit, Michigan, he had lived in the beautiful mountains of Hendersonville since the early 1980's. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Veronica Swiet Mikina, also a Detroit native and currently of Hendersonville; his daughter Janice Mikina and her husband Tony Leonard, both of Cincinnati, OH; his son Gerald Mikina of Hendersonville; his two grandchildren, Nate and Laura Leonard, both of Cincinnati; and numerous nieces and nephews. John was the son of the late Michael and Catherine Mikina, of Detroit. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Stanley Mikina of St. Pete Beach, FL, Joseph Mikina of Detroit, and an infant brother, who died in the 1918 flu epidemic. John worked for the United States Government as a meteorologist with the National Weather Service for 33 years, including serving the nation at home during World War II in Sault Ste. Marie, MI through his meteorological survey work. He retired from government service in 1974, and in the early 1980's moved to Hendersonville to be nearer his older brother and best friend, Stanley, who resided in the area during the summer months. John was a man who never stopped learning, reading, asking questions, and trying to find the answers. In everything he did, he quested for knowledge. He recently wrote that "mortal man is happiest when in pursuit of a goal." John was a meteorologist by trade, but outside of work, his passions were many astronomy, space travel, mathematics and statistics, woodworking and homebuilding, mechanics and inventing, photography, horse racing, golf, bowling, mystery and western novels these were his most prominent interests. He also held several patents, jointly with his brother Stanley, a retired Westinghouse engineer, including one for a continuously variable speed transmission for automobiles. In his later years, John affirmed his belief in a personal relationship with a greater universal spirit who he believed is also continuously "striving for higher levels of knowledge." John was a quiet, thoughtful man with a love of life, and always a smile and a kind word for everyone he met. He will be deeply missed by his family. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. An online guest book is available at www.thosshepherd.com. Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors & Cremation Memorial Center is in charge of arrangements.
